Why this course matters

A professional perspective
Waqf institutions sit at the intersection of asset stewardship, social development, Islamic finance, and public regulation. This course matters because it builds the practical competence needed to create, manage, develop, and govern awqaf in real institutional settings. You will examine how Shariah principles such as perpetuity, inalienability, and donor stipulation interact with national laws, including contexts where trusts or foundations serve as near-waqf mechanisms. The course also develops skills in governance, transparency, stakeholder accountability, investment analysis, risk management, and financing structures such as sukuk, diminishing musharakah, BOT arrangements, and composite contracts. These capabilities are valuable for waqf boards, mutawallis, Islamic financial institutions, regulators, charities, foundations, fintech initiatives, and development organisations seeking sustainable ways to mobilise assets for public benefit.
Through the lens of faith
Waqf is closely connected to the Islamic ideal of lasting benefit: wealth and effort directed toward purposes that continue to serve people and creation beyond a single moment of giving. Studying its Shariah principles and regulatory realities can be part of seeking ʿilm nāfiʿ—knowledge that helps trustees, professionals, and communities act with greater care, competence, and integrity. This course approaches waqf through values that resonate with the maqāsid al-Sharīʿah: safeguarding faith, life, intellect, family, wealth, and the wider common good through sustainable institutions. Its emphasis on accountability, transparency, ethical governance, and prudent development reminds us that entrusted assets are not merely financial resources; they are amanah. Managing them well is a responsibility before the Creator and a service to people, communities, and the environment.
