Women: Leadership and Empowerment in Islam

Women have shaped Islamic civilisation as scholars, jurists, teachers, patrons, leaders and reformers — a history often underexplored. This course builds a grounded understanding of women's leadership and empowerment in Islam: frameworks of gender, power and leadership in Islamic thought; models of moral and political agency in the Qur'ān and the Prophetic Sunnah; the jurisprudential debates on women's public roles; and ethical frameworks for gender and development. It is anchored in case studies of intellectual, economic, political, social and spiritual leadership across Islamic history — from scholars and patrons to Sufi matriarchs — and closes with a capstone. It is valuable for students, educators, researchers, community and organisational leaders, and anyone seeking a historically serious, principled account of women's contribution and agency in Islam.

This course approaches women's leadership as ʿilm nāfiʿ: recovering, with evidence and care, how Islam honours the agency, intellect and moral standing of women. Studying the Qur'ān, the Sunnah, the fiqh tradition and the lived history of women who taught, led, gave and guided, learners reflect on dignity, justice and the shared vocation of khilāfah (stewardship) before Allah. The themes connect to the maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah: the protection of intellect, family, dignity and the flourishing of the whole community. Without issuing legal determinations or importing external ideologies, the course distinguishes revealed principle from cultural custom, and invites learners to see the empowerment of women as faithfulness to the Qur'ānic vision of men and women as protectors and helpers of one another.
