In Islam, clothing is a sign of dignity before it is a matter of fashion. The Qur'an calls garments a covering and an adornment, and a means of protection, and in the same breath reminds us that the garment of God-consciousness is better still. To clothe people honestly, to guard them from harm and deception, and to give them what they were promised is closer to worship than to mere trade. The Prophet, peace be upon him, taught that God is beautiful and loves beauty, while defining arrogance as rejecting truth and belittling people, as reported in Sahih Muslim. So beauty and modest adornment are not suspect; what is blameworthy is deception, extravagance, waste and harm. That ethic runs through this course: truthful claims, dignity for the maker as well as the wearer, kindness to the animal, care for water and earth, and a turn away from the waste of disposable fashion.
