Why this course matters

A professional perspective
Climate competence is becoming an essential capability for Islamic finance professionals, asset owners, businesses, and public-interest institutions. This course builds the foundation needed to understand the climate challenge in practical terms: the greenhouse effect, global warming, carbon emissions, major greenhouse gases, Global Warming Potential, and the use of CO2-equivalent measures. You will learn why emissions are tracked by country and sector, and how energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, land use, and industry shape climate exposure. These skills support better climate-related analysis, product design, portfolio review, stakeholder communication, and organisational planning across the Islamic economy. By connecting climate management with Islamic finance, the course helps learners engage responsibly with emerging sustainability expectations while grounding decisions in clear concepts rather than slogans.
Through the lens of faith
For Muslim learners, climate management is not only a technical subject; it is part of seeking beneficial knowledge, ʿilm nāfiʿ, that helps protect life, livelihoods, and the wider trust of creation. This course approaches environmental stewardship through Islamic concepts such as khalīfah, wasatiyyah, and mīzān: human responsibility, balanced conduct, and the order placed within creation. Understanding greenhouse gases, warming potential, and sectoral emissions can deepen awareness of how human activity affects water, food, health, habitats, and vulnerable communities—concerns closely aligned with the maqāsid al-Sharīʿah. Without issuing legal rulings, the course invites learners to reflect on how Islamic finance can serve accountability, moderation, and public benefit, so that financial decisions are informed by responsibility to the Creator and mercy toward creation.
